How does fear relate to dehumanization?
Fear has an amazing way of controlling people. The threat of losing something or being put under undesirable conditions can force people to be out of their element, and act in certain ways that they normally would not. Fear does not cause control. Fear IS control.
Fear creates these undesirable environments where humans become violent and more sporadic in behavior. Take for example the threats of nuclear bombs from North Korea, and President Donald Trump's responses. People were scared, and the nation was in terror. Many were prepping for doomsday and acting out of their normal behavior. When North Korea began launching test missiles, people began to believe that it was going to be the end of the world.
Fear is a mechanism to help safeguard us from harm, and through that, we have the ability to lose human emotions. We only care about ourselves.
Maslow's Pyramid of Psychological needs is a key piece of evidence to back up this statement.

Humans have the tendency to prioritize their safety over love and sympathies, and that's how we can be controlled. In a state of constant fear, we could break our relationships with acquaintances, friends, and family, and prioritize our own safety over that.
The loss of our emotions and sympathies is the loss of our humanity. Therefore, fear is the cause of our dehumanization. |
