Now that we understand how the government manipulates our fear, how do they manipulate the opposite?
1972. Richard Nixon is the President of the United States. But the Watergate Scandal is ongoing, and the trust that Americans have in the government is declining. Suspicions are arising about what else the government is hiding.
Therefore, conspiracy theories become widespread. Many begin wondering how the government is manipulating them.
But, the government still has some power left -- their word. Many Americans still have faith in the government, and believe in their leaders. The government uses this to their advantage. They cover up their tracks, and create a sense of euphoria for their believers. A perfect environment for them to live in -- their leaders guiding the way to a better future.
Even with more Conspiracy Theories coming to surface due to recent events, the government uses their word as a weapon against these theories. After all, they're only theories, and the government presents us with facts, right?
The fact of the matter is, is that if there's something that these theorists say, or even professional journalists, they can be discredited, publicly by their leaders.
During the Watergate Scandal, Nixon repeatedly discredited the press, even in the midst of overwhelming evidence against him -- and the American people believed him.
This even occurs today, as our current President discredits the press, using the rhetoric of "Fake News" in the midst of a negative news article written about him, and his party which he leads believes him. The President is meant to be the face of the United States Government, and currently in the end of 2018, Donald Trump is that face.

And that position comes with a lot of benefits. The ability to announce to the American people that something is false, or bring attention to another subject is a massive one, and allows our government, not just our president, to control our attention.
Being a public figure has its' benefits, including controlling apathetic feelings.
